First Holy Communion

Enrolment for our 2025-2026 class is now open.

Our parish based First Holy Communion programme will run from October 2025 until Holy Communion Day in June 2026 for children in Year 4 and above. 12 preparatory sessions will be held  in the sacristy on Saturdays at 11am. They are led by four catechists who are parishioners of long standing with experience in running the preparation for First Holy Communion at St George’s.

We follow a First Reconciliation and Holy Communion resource program, specifically created by the Diocese of Leeds for families and parishes to help children prepare for the sacrament. The program includes a book, videos, and other materials with sessions that families can explore together, including discussions, activities, prayers, and guidance for parents and catechists.

These cover areas such as search the church for particular items, explanation of Catholic practices, what to look out for while at Mass and new words associated with reconciliation, First Holy Communion and the Mass. Our programme recognises the central role of parents in the development of their children and their faith. It explores the many gifts given to us by way of a family journey to Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Each child is prepared so that they may have sufficient knowledge in their own capacity to understand.  It is expected that children regularly attend Sunday Mass while preparing for the Sacraments.

In the words of Pope Leo XIV

“In the family, faith is handed on together with life, generation after generation. It is shared like food at the family table and like the love in our hearts. In this way, families become privileged places in which to encounter Jesus, who loves us and desires our good, always.”
